ABOUT BRISTOL NOVELISTS

Welcome to our website. Members of the Bristol Novelists Writing Group meet weekly to critique and support each other as we work on our manuscripts in preparation for publication. Membership is by invitation.

Our writing has been published on radio and television and in the national press, and we have a number of competition and award wins under our belts.

We have widely differing voices and write in a variety of genres, including thriller, satire and literary fiction. Our diversity is our strength, with each writer bringing a unique insight to our discussions. Every week one member submits a sample of work for discussion; everyone reads it and prepares comments in readiness for our meeting. Whether it’s plot, character, tone, or pace and presentation, all the many aspects of novel writing are covered, and the work that emerges from this process has been road-tested rigorously and honestly.

You can find out more about us as individuals on the writers page above.

NEWS

We're so very sad to announce that Glenn Carmichael died at the beginning of May 2020. It was through Glenn's work as a teacher that this group was founded. As a member of Bristol Novelists and the founder of Redrafters, he continued his commitment to supporting other writers’ work, and anybody who's had a brush with the performance poetry scene will realize what an influence he was to so many. Glenn’s own talent and his distinctive voice were evident in his writing and his performances. Links to his work will remain here, on his page. We miss him dearly. It won't be the same without you, Glenn.

Group member Paul McIntyre has snagged a literary agent, Bill Goodall, who is pitching his novel, Raising Dad, to a number of publishers. When you next check back, there might well be an ISBN attached to that title.

Bristol Novelist Maunagh Kelly was longlisted for the Bridport Novel Prize (the Peggy Chapman Andrews Award) for her latest novel, The Commune by the Park. Her talent as a poet is also on display in an anthology of her work, entitled Grasshopper. Maunagh launched the book and gave readings from it at Manky Poets - a group that has hosted Poet Laureates Simon Armitage and Carol Ann Duffy. Please email us if you'd like a copy.
